With heavy clouds forming over the Memorial Park in Wattstown it was obvious that the weather would have a big influence on this game.
From the kick off the home side were eager to run the ball with their centres David Gibbs and Matthew Evans taking good running lines in support of skipper and fly half Nathan Bruford. There was also good running from right wing Ben Evans who was tackled well by Sports winger Ritchie Burne and later by Scott Narbeth. However, one of these defending tackles was deemed ‘high’ and a penalty given to Wattstown which Bruford converted.
At this stage the Sports defence was holding well. Then for the next 20 minutes the heavens opened and it was the home side who looked the most comfortable in these conditions, their handling looking that little bit sharper. But the Sports forced them in to an error in their own 22 and Josh Davies levelled the scores. With the ball like a bar of soap, the home side tightened up the game as they hounded Sports fly half near his line, and it was scrum half Ian Jones who gathered the spilt ball to score near the posts for a try that Bruford converted with ease. The conditions were now dreadfull and many mistakes being made by both sides.
The Sports handling was poor at times and they soon gave away a penalty that allowed Bruford to take the lead to !3-3. The half ended after a series of ping pong kicking when Jamie Wicks took a crash ball to wrong foot the Sports defence and score under the posts.
Skipper Bruford ending the half at 20-3.
The home side stared the half strongly and good defence from Roddy Boobyer and Scott Narbeth kept them at bay until a deliberate collapsing by the forwards on their own line gave Wattstown a penalty try and took the csore to 27 –3. The next try conjured by the home side was the best of the afternoon with a slippery ball the whole threequarter line handled before full back MikeEvans rounded the Sports defence to score under the posts. The score went to 41 points when a clever chip from the outside half skidded nicely for winger Matthew Evans to collect and touch down. His kick converted this time by Mike Evans.
The final movement came as the Sports never gave up their attacking mind set when Craig Danks, who had a good run moments before in supporting Boobyer, ran and chipped ahead to gather a kind bounce and score a well earned try. Final score 41-8.
